STS has launched a new subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service called JustFlicks in South Africa. The wireless application service provider took over the Vidi video streaming service when it was closed down by previous owner Times Media Group.

JustFlicks claims users must have an Internet connection speed of at least 1Mbps, although a higher speed will ensure better quality streamed video.

Over 1,000 hours of films and television series are currently available on the SVOD platform, with an additional 100 titles planned by JustFlicks each month. Subscriptions start at ZAR1 per day, and are collected by the user’s mobile phone operator.

This latest SVOD service joins a growing number of online video platforms in South Africa. In the past year the country has welcomed international players such as Netflix and PCCW’s ONTAPtv, as well as Showmax, owned by local media powerhouse Naspers.

Media measurement company media measurement company Nielsen conducted a survey before the introduction of Netflix and ONTAPtv and found that 63% of South Africans watch video-on-demand (VOD) content online, with 79% doing so at least once a week.
